Episode 53: Catchin’ Up + CTRL

Welcome back – it’s been SO long! As we enter the middle of 2017, we connected to play catch-up with each other and with our wonderful #TMH listeners.

As Ashley continues her travel journey with Remote Year, she shares what the past couple of months have been like living in Argentina during the country’s winter season. Back in New York, Steph is getting ready for her first summer in the big city. Although we’ve been miles apart, recent months have brought sudden periods of growth and self-realizations for us both.

While on the topic of growth + evolvement, we give our first impressions of the new SZA album CTRL – TDE’s unapologetic sultry songstress delivers all the #carefreeblackgirl vibes on this long-awaited piece of work, and we are here for every bit of it.

Thanks for listening!

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 48: Survival, Revivals & Finales

Welcome back lovelies! Terrifying school shootings – how is this still a thing? We discuss how a man ran his car into students and then used a knife to attack others on The Ohio State University campus. As an alumna, Steph chats about the impact these types of incidents have on past, present and future students.

Gilmore Girls made its triumphant return to Netflix last week and it was too much too handle. SPOILER ALERT: we talk about the final four words of the last episode, and how Amy Sherman-Palladino’s writing is everything we could have asked for in the revival.

Piggy-backing on some more TV recap, Twitter was going crazy over HBO’s Insecure finale and we could not get enough. With Ash #teamIssa and Steph #teamLawrence we share all the feels we felt after watching this cliff-hanger finale, and how it relates to real-world dating.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Episode 47: Protests & Pressure

Greetings Millies! We’re back on the mic’s this week after a quick break. Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock was named People Magazine’s 2016 Sexiest Man Alive – we chat briefly on what makes him “sexy” and an overall good role model.

Shifting gears, we get into the powerful student protests that have taken place over the past week since America’s new President-elect was chosen. While the youth often get a bad rap for being lazy, glued-to-an-iPhone narcissists, we share how their recent public action combats generational stereotypes at a time when unity is needed the most.

Take some freakin’ action people and fight for what you believe in! We express the importance of supporting organizations like Refugee Rights, and subscribing to a newspaper or donating to ProPublica to keep trustworthy journalism alive.

Has dating become hopeless? A Rolling Stone article published yesterday explores the awkward, in-between space many Millennials are currently in as we try to achieve personal intimacy in the age of social media and internet dating. We give our favorite takeaways from the piece and our hopes for the future of relationships.

Episode 40: Anthems & #Aubrih

Welcome back #TMH listeners! This week, we tackle the controversy surrounding the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the playing of the national anthem. We discuss how his race, upbringing, and his NFL platform all play into him taking a stand against police brutality in the U.S., and how social media reacted to his actions.

The 2016 MTV VMA’s did not disappoint this year – with four different stunning Rihanna performances, a 16-minute Beyonce show and an obnoxious Kanye rant, it was undoubtedly an entertaining night. We share our (Ashley’s) obsession with the birth of #AubRih and why Drake presenting Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award was the cutest moment in the history of the VMA’s.

Do nice guys always finish last? We chat about the patience many Millennials lack when it comes to finding “the one”, and the need to stay away from the Chris Brown’s and wait for your Drake.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 30: Aspire to Inspire

Welcome back listeners! This week we sat down with our friend, fellow DC Millennial and motivational speaker Brandon Northington. He is currently the Assistant State’s Attorney in Charles County, Maryland and a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentorship organization.

Brandon discussed what it’s like working as a successful Millennial in law, and how he “owns the court room” when he walks in to a case.

He also shared with us his secret to balancing being engaged at 27-years-old with his frienships, and why it is important now more than ever for Millennials to foster and inspire the next generation of youth.

“I use my life as a testimony to those who may not have a postive, tangible role model.”

Listen above for our full chat with Brandon, and share your thoughts.

Episode 26: Legacies + Lemonade

Welcome back lovelies! The past week has been filled with a roller coaster of emotions. The world mourned Prince – who transitioned last Thursday, after bringing us decades of timeless music and an unmatched influence on pop culture. His death left a sour taste in the mouths of generations who have worshipped his music, but he leaves a legacy for today’s artists like Justin Timberlake and Miguel.

A couple days later, Beyoncé released her much anticipated visual album, #LEMONADE, reminding us of her own legacy she continues to wow us with. We talk about her perfectly crafted artistic videos that grabbed our attention the most.

The album was filled with an overflow of emotional expression – emotions that many Millennials are often too busy to address within themselves. We discuss how we each emotionally detox, and the importance of taking a moment to re-focus.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 23: Springing Forward

Happy hump-day listeners! This week, we give our take on the backlash R&B singer Kehlani received after a few controversial personal photos were posted on Instagram. We discuss the negative effects of social media on relationships and mental well-being in the Millennial generation, and why more light should be shed on the topic.

This past Monday, the U.S. Capitol building was shutdown after a Tennessee man pulled out a weapon in the Capitol Visitor Center – we share how this incident represents our country’s issue with national security in a time when terrorism and other national fears are on the rise.

Spring has sprung! Tis’ the season for change, fresh beginnings and positive vibes. Listen to what we are looking forward to as temperatures warm up on the East Coast (check out our photos below from D.C.’s Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery).
