Episode 41: Yes, We Belong

Welcome back! We kick start our conversation with Georgetown University’s decision to offer admission advantages to any descendants of slaves who were sold in one of the largest, well documented 1838 slave trades. We discuss if this action is enough, and why this is relevant during a time when racial tensions are high in America.

Solange Knowles is known for her soulful presence and artistic mind, so when she wrote ‘And Do You Belong? I do’ on her site this past Sunday, we had to read. In the beautifully written piece, Knowles expresses what it means to ‘belong’ as an African American in ‘white spaces’. We share how our own self-identification has shaped our experiences.

As we discussed in last week’s newsletter, it’s nothing new that Millennials get blamed for it all – declining car sales, workplace gaps, cultural laziness – the list goes on. We briefly chat on how Laura Marsh sets the record straight in a New Republic piece that breaks the myth of Millennials being “cultural rebels.”

This week you’ll notice we may sound a little different – Steph is currently in Denver, CO for the 2016 Online News Association Conference and we decided to record during her layover in Houston. It was nothing a little #teamwork couldn’t handle! Stay tuned as we will soon make some exciting changes for #TMH.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 40: Anthems & #Aubrih

Welcome back #TMH listeners! This week, we tackle the controversy surrounding the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the playing of the national anthem. We discuss how his race, upbringing, and his NFL platform all play into him taking a stand against police brutality in the U.S., and how social media reacted to his actions.

The 2016 MTV VMA’s did not disappoint this year – with four different stunning Rihanna performances, a 16-minute Beyonce show and an obnoxious Kanye rant, it was undoubtedly an entertaining night. We share our (Ashley’s) obsession with the birth of #AubRih and why Drake presenting Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award was the cutest moment in the history of the VMA’s.

Do nice guys always finish last? We chat about the patience many Millennials lack when it comes to finding “the one”, and the need to stay away from the Chris Brown’s and wait for your Drake.

The 2016 Olympics have begun and our Facebook feeds are full of some of the most compelling sports testimonials. From Simone Biles to Ibtihaj Muhammad, we are captivated by everything that is happening in Rio right now. Check out our favorite Olympians so far and how U.S. athletes are making history.

Millennials all over the world are struggling, but are they the same struggles we face in the U.S? We discuss the different ways Millennials around the world are living and how social media has impacted awareness for the worldwide struggle-bus.

Episode 19: When it Hits the Fan

Happy hump-day! This week we dive into a few controversial topics that have been circulating in the media. We discuss the backlash the Egypt-based film Exodus has received and how it serves as an example of Hollywood’s “white inclusion“- a study released this Monday broke down the mass underrepresentation of color in movies and television.

#FreeKesha has been appearing all over social media – we give our take on her current legal battle with Sony and why the right attention needs to be brought to her case.

For loyal Walking Dead fans, this past Sunday’s episode left your jaw hitting the floor with #Richonne becoming an item. Ashley chats about her reactions to the new romance, while Steph shares what she has been Netflixing.
