Episode 53: Catchin’ Up + CTRL

Welcome back – it’s been SO long! As we enter the middle of 2017, we connected to play catch-up with each other and with our wonderful #TMH listeners.

As Ashley continues her travel journey with Remote Year, she shares what the past couple of months have been like living in Argentina during the country’s winter season. Back in New York, Steph is getting ready for her first summer in the big city. Although we’ve been miles apart, recent months have brought sudden periods of growth and self-realizations for us both.

While on the topic of growth + evolvement, we give our first impressions of the new SZA album CTRL – TDE’s unapologetic sultry songstress delivers all the #carefreeblackgirl vibes on this long-awaited piece of work, and we are here for every bit of it.

Thanks for listening!

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 51: Moonlight

Hey, Millies! A few thousand miles and technical difficulties couldn’t hold us back too long – this week we are happily reunited with each other and with you lovely listeners – welcome back. 🙂

The 89th Academy Awards were held this past Sunday and our favorite Oscar wins included Viola Davis taking home Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Fences and Moonlight taking home Best Picture. We chat about the awkward award announcement mix up and discuss if this years’ wins showed improvement from the 2016 #OscarsSoWhite backlash on Hollywood.

Over the weekend Steph attended a live podcast taping in NYC for the hip-hop and pop culture podcast, The Read – a question from the audience sparked a controversial discussion on societal gender roles in the current dating scene for Millennials. We share our personal thoughts on the topic, as well as the importance of open-mindedness and inclusion at a time when gender issues are on the front lines.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 49: Publicity & Podcasting

Welcome back Millies! We hope our east coast listeners are staying warm on these brutally cold days, it’s very burr.

Kanye West is at it again with his attention seeking shenanigans – earlier this week the musician was seen at the Trump Tower in New York for a mysterious meeting with president-elect Donald Trump. We share our thoughts (and disappointment) in what some are calling a publicity stunt.

Diversity and representation in media is a topic near and dear to our hearts. After seeing the #SupportPOCPods hashtag on Twitter last week, we were inspired to discuss why it’s important now more than ever to have a diverse spectrum of storytellers in media, especially in podcasting.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 37: Hurdles & Hashtags

Welcome back lovelies! We begin this week with a quick recap of the #NABJNAHJ16 convention. After participating in the panel ‘So You Think You Can Podcast’ on Friday, we came back feeling refreshed and inspired! We chat about going to a convention full of talented journalists of color, and how important it is to never give up on your vision.

The 2016 Olympics have begun and our Facebook feeds are full of some of the most compelling sports testimonials. From Simone Biles to Ibtihaj Muhammad, we are captivated by everything that is happening in Rio right now. Check out our favorite Olympians so far and how U.S. athletes are making history.

Millennials all over the world are struggling, but are they the same struggles we face in the U.S? We discuss the different ways Millennials around the world are living and how social media has impacted awareness for the worldwide struggle-bus.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 36: More About Millies

Welcome back! This week, we chat about the social media reaction to a video of Malia Obama dancing at this year’s Lollapalooza music festival over the weekend, and why everyone was a little too harsh on the nation’s First Daughter.

Wednesday marked the start of the joint 2016 NABJ/NAHJ Convention here in Washington, D.C, and everyone got word on Monday that Hillary Clinton will be in attendance on Friday. We share what we think the Democratic presidential nominee will have to say to a room full of journalists of color, as well as a few details about the exciting podcasting panel we get to be a part of.

Millies don’t want a Milli?!? A recent Wall Street Journal article says that Millennials don’t exactly see themselves becoming millionaires during their lifetime – we discuss our key takeaways from the article and how we are working on our own personal spending habits while living in D.C.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Steph & Ash

Episode 33: The New Minority Majority

Happy July lovelies! This week we kickstart our discussion with the latest Serial podcast update. A judge ordered a retrial for Adnan Syed after a 1999 lifetime conviction for murdering his former girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. We talk about how the podcast helped shed light on the case that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

According to new 2015 U.S. Census data, babies of color are making news this week by outnumbering their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Although NPR couldn’t reach any babies for comment, we chat about the societal impact this could have and compare our childhood experiences.

Fourth of July weekend was rainy in D.C. but thankfully Ashley was in New Orleans. We catch up on her Essence Festival adventures and hint at what makes this July particularly special.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 21: Slow It Down Pt.2 – Stefanie Seifer

actress-cute-quirky-best-friends

As Stefanie Seifer sits in her apartment on the phone, she stares at a wall full of Post- It notes. Some of them are personal, but most are inspirational. “Stop beating yourself up…stop manipulating, start being open to what’s around you…choose love over fear.” They read like a twenties handbook, carved from experiences with success and self-awareness.

“Worrying doesn’t change the outcome, all it does is make you feel worse in the long run”

The Dirty and Thirty co-creator has used this mantra as a way to survive her twenties. After graduating from Emerson College, Stefanie moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in entertainment. It is there that Stuart Brazell and Stefanie created DirtyandThirty.com, merging their different paths and similar humor to create videos and content for the website. One intern, 110 writers and five years later, the website has become a go-to for millennials in their twenties and thirties.

Stefanie spends most days acting, working on the website, meditating and doing yoga. Always craving a taste for sour beer has become a recent obsession for this California gal.

This week, she took time to dish out some awesome advice to us twenty-somethings on The Millennial Hour. Just know when it comes to the twenties, Stefanie says we all need to “breathe, deal with it, and see what comes next.”
