Episode 5: Heroes, Headlines, Horrors and Homecomings

Five is live! In this week’s episode, we tackle some hot topics with our special guest, our friend and fellow journo – Joi. From Rihanna and Rachel to Kim K and the Kardashians, we were here for everything Twitter had to say about two controversial statements published this week in the popular Vanity Fair and Cosmopolitan magazines.

Switching gears, we also dive into what has been one of America’s biggest policy dilemmas over the past few years – gun control. Last week, a 26-year-old man opened fire and killed nine at a college campus in Oregon. Afterwards, Obama made some statements about our gun control laws, adding that “our thought’s and prayers are not enough.” Some media outlets have begun to label this another case of mental illness gone wrong, but could this be the only answer?

Despite the tragedy, many students and alumni will be flocking to their college campuses in the coming weeks for homecoming. We’re taking this opportunity to talk about our varied undergraduate experiences as black women.

We want to hear your thoughts so please comment below and make sure to check out Joi’s blog HERE!

Episode 4: When Words Matter

Welcome back beauties! This week, we discuss R&B singer August Alsina feeling up a woman who he brought on stage and the latest in Ben Carson’s controversy. Also – texting back an Ex when you’re in a new relationship – good or bad idea? When that hotline bling, does it really only mean one thing? With texting being one of the main forms of everyday communication, this subject can get very sticky, very fast.

Plus, as nineties babies, it was only right that we attend DC’s 90s Bar Crawl this past weekend. Steph went for the Aaliyah look while Ash channeled her inner Spice Girl. We even ran into Pikachu and Charlamander while bar hopping! It was all that and a bag of chips! 🙂  Check out some pics below and make sure to share your thoughts in the comments section:

Labor Day Recap: Made In America 2015

IMG_3861

As summer is wrapping up, I (Steph) decided to check one more thing off my bucket list and attend a full-fledged music festival. Here are my top five best, and worst, moments during my experience at Jay Z’s Made in America Festival 2015.

  1. WORST: Overcrowding.

image1 (2)

Jay Z, you sold wayyyyy too many tickets to this event. There were entirely too many people, which took away from the experience.

  1. BEST: Getting almost front row views of The Weeknd’s performance.

image2 (1)

It definitely took standing in the hot sun all day, but it was worth every minute.

  1. WORST: Smells.

Which for the most part were disgusting and unidentifiable.

  1. BEST: Meek Mill bringing his boo Nicki on stage.

From what I heard, Nicki was the best part of the Meek Mill performance.

  1. WORST: Food.

The food was horrible, but then again, it’s a festival soooooo I can’t complain too much.

  1. BEST: Staying in downtown Philly.

This was by far the best decision I could have made location-wise. Staying close to the venue and train station was a life saver after long festival days. Not to mention we got upgraded to a suite room!!

  1. WORST: The nightlife scene.

image1 (1)

It was kinda weak. Even being in the heart of downtown Philly. But for all my Ohio State friends, I found another Insomnia Cookies!

  1. BEST: Making new friends.

image2

When your 2 inches away from the people around you for 6+ hours, you’re bound to make a couple of friends! Here’s to all of you who sustained my armpit sweat.

1.WORST:  Closing Headlining with The Weeknd rather than Beyoncé

Beyoncé should have ended the concert. Reason? Because she is Beyoncé. Who better to end a festival?

  1. BEST: BEYONCE!!

Her performance was flawless. All hail Queen Bey!! And not to mention her man Jay Z was supporting in the crowd.

XOXO,

Steph

Labor Day Recap: Basking in Natures Beauty

While Steph was busy taking in all of Beyonce’s reign at Made in America (and making me very jealous via Snapchat), I spent my weekend enjoying a couple of my favorite nature spots in Maryland before the weather officially shifts into the upcoming fall season.

On Saturday, I hit up Great Falls Park, a beautiful place to go hiking and relaxing while taking in up close views of the Potomac River – which runs through the entire DMV area. Sunday, I took a day trip with the family to Ocean City, MD where I indulged in (way too much) junk food and got in my last tanning opportunity in the summer sun (whoop whoop!).

Check out a some pictures from my weekend in the gallery below. 🙂

Episode 2: Idris, VMA’s & More

What could be better than a little Idris Elba to carry you through your afternoon work woes on humpday? Kicking this week’s podcast off with the actors “too street” credibility and diving into a little post-VMA ridiculousness has been the highlight of our week.

Self-declared millennial Kanye running for Prez in 2020?!?! I mean come on, we had to talk about his rant and every other messy millennial induced activity that took place at the 2015 VMA’s.  If nothing else, get ready to drop a Justin Bieber tear, laugh like Swift all the way to the trophy bank and channel your inner Nicki Minaj side-eye/death stare.

This is The Millennial Hour.

#TMH Tune of the Week: Nicki Minaj // The Night is Still Young

Episode 1: Hello!

You’re probably halfway through your work day right about now, plagued with that antsy midday feeling and glancing at the clock on your computer screen every five minutes, wondering why it isn’t 5 o’freakin clock already. If you’re in Washington, D.C., it’s probably the case that your lunch break wasn’t hardly enough time to escape the blasting AC and gray walls of your cubicle (or office, if you’re all fancy schmancy) and intake all the wonderful warmth of the sunny afternoon in the last days summer has offer. It’s only Tuesday and the week is already a long one. We feel you, we get it, we fully understand your pain.

In our greatest attempts to help you get through your long, boring work days, we welcome you to The Millennial Hour – a space where we share personal stories, advice and what it’s like to be a millenial trying to survive, explore new things and successfully establish yourself in adulthood. Listen above to our (unofficial) introduction of who we are, and what we plan to do with this here blog. Visit our ‘Authors’ page for official bios, if you like. Again, welcome, and stay tuned for our weekly podcasts, adventures and more! 🙂

XOXO,

Steph & Ash
