Episode 46: Laughing While Podcasting

Welcome back lovelies! This week, we catch up on our favorite fall TV. From Westworld, Atlanta and Insecure to New Girl and Shameless, we are obsessed with everything that’s on TV. Check out our thoughts on this seasons top picks.

Sometimes when something hurts, laughing through the pain can be the only comfort. This is the approach we are taking when it comes to this year’s election. Listen to the ways we ease our political distress until election day on November 8th.

Laughter is can be awkward, especially in the workplace. We chat about our experiences with workplace humor as Millennials, and why it’s important to think twice before dishing out that semi-offensive joke.

Things are changing with TMH! Beginning this week, we will be releasing new episodes every two weeks. Thank you, as always, for listening!

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 45: #GirlBoss

Welcome back Millies! Yesterday, Covergirl announced their first male brand ambassador (or ‘CoverBoy’), 17-year-old James Charles. Over the past year, James has risen to fame on both YouTube and Instagram for his killer makeup skills – we chat about how this is another step towards combatting gender roles in our culture.

Everyone is tiredddd of Trump’s nonstop shenanigans. This past weekend an audio file from 2005 was released, where the presidential candidate was recorded saying some disrespectful and derogatory things about sexually assaulting women. The same day, author Kelly Oxford tweeted her first assault, and encouraged her followers to share their stories – which led to an outpouring of thousands of responses. We discuss why it is so important to address sexual assault in our society, and the need for both genders to speak out about it in order for real change to happen.

According to a survey mentioned in a recent Wall Street Journal article, Millennial women express  more ambition than women of previous generations, but are facing the same wage gaps and struggles to get ahead in the corporate world. This has forced many 20-something’s to forge their own paths by creating start-ups and joining more inclusive companies – we share our thoughts and experiences on this issue.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Episode 44: Metamorphosis

Happy Wednesday lovelies! Kim Kardashian-West was robbed while being held at gunpoint early Monday morning by thieves who posed as police in Paris, France. The robbers reportedly took $10 million worth of jewelry and a phone while leaving Kim shaken up about the incident. We talk about how oversharing on social media played into this horrific situation and how it can happen to anyone (minus the stealing of millions of dollars).

Solange Knowles released her fourth studio album A Seat at the Table last week and we cannot get enough! The soulful, melodic artistry is arguably one of our favorite music pieces of the year. We discuss a few of our favorite songs, as well as the political and personal themes the album conveys.

Last week we chatted about some of the things that keep us inspired when times can be particularly low. This week, we follow-up on that conversation with positive news, and how we handle rapid, but positive, changes after a storm.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 43: History in the Making

Happy hump-day! This past Saturday marked the grand opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. We share our excitement for this long overdue museum, and what it means to America’s black community at a time when we are all seeking unity.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton threw ALL the shade at their first 2016 Presidential Debate on Monday night. We chat about our favorite below-the-belt comments and how this reminded us more of a WWE SmackDown than a political debate.

Manifesting our purpose and passions in life is a struggle Millennials know all too well, especially with the country’s job market often not meeting our career needs. We offer a few words of wisdom and tidbits of advice on how to stay focused on professional growth.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Steph & Ash

Episode 42: Breakups, Blues & Future of News

Welcome back lovelies! It’s only halfway through the week and to tell you the truth, we’re already a bit emotionally exhausted. From Tulsa to Charlotte, the question of if #BlackLivesMatter is something we are all wondering. In an effort to take a moment to breathe and process all the heavy news, we offer some lighthearted topics this week.

Brangelina is over! Angelina Jolie-Pitt filed for divorce from Brad Pitt yesterday, citing irreconcilable differences after two years of marriage and 12 years of partnership. Countless humanitarian contributions, six children and several Hollywood projects are just some of the things the two accomplished together. We chat about their marriage, Jennifer Aniston (of course) and what Twitter had to say.

Steph spent the last week in Denver for the 2016 Online News Association Conference. One of the interesting things about this conference was the collaboration of start-ups and technology companies with news organizations. We discuss the meshing of tech and media, and share what it means for the future of journalism.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Episode 41: Yes, We Belong

Welcome back! We kick start our conversation with Georgetown University’s decision to offer admission advantages to any descendants of slaves who were sold in one of the largest, well documented 1838 slave trades. We discuss if this action is enough, and why this is relevant during a time when racial tensions are high in America.

Solange Knowles is known for her soulful presence and artistic mind, so when she wrote ‘And Do You Belong? I do’ on her site this past Sunday, we had to read. In the beautifully written piece, Knowles expresses what it means to ‘belong’ as an African American in ‘white spaces’. We share how our own self-identification has shaped our experiences.

As we discussed in last week’s newsletter, it’s nothing new that Millennials get blamed for it all – declining car sales, workplace gaps, cultural laziness – the list goes on. We briefly chat on how Laura Marsh sets the record straight in a New Republic piece that breaks the myth of Millennials being “cultural rebels.”

This week you’ll notice we may sound a little different – Steph is currently in Denver, CO for the 2016 Online News Association Conference and we decided to record during her layover in Houston. It was nothing a little #teamwork couldn’t handle! Stay tuned as we will soon make some exciting changes for #TMH.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Episode 40: Anthems & #Aubrih

Welcome back #TMH listeners! This week, we tackle the controversy surrounding the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the playing of the national anthem. We discuss how his race, upbringing, and his NFL platform all play into him taking a stand against police brutality in the U.S., and how social media reacted to his actions.

The 2016 MTV VMA’s did not disappoint this year – with four different stunning Rihanna performances, a 16-minute Beyonce show and an obnoxious Kanye rant, it was undoubtedly an entertaining night. We share our (Ashley’s) obsession with the birth of #AubRih and why Drake presenting Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award was the cutest moment in the history of the VMA’s.

Do nice guys always finish last? We chat about the patience many Millennials lack when it comes to finding “the one”, and the need to stay away from the Chris Brown’s and wait for your Drake.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Steph & Ash
