Episode 53: Catchin’ Up + CTRL

Welcome back – it’s been SO long! As we enter the middle of 2017, we connected to¬†play catch-up with each other and with our wonderful #TMH listeners.

As Ashley continues her travel journey with Remote Year, she shares what the past couple of months have been like living in Argentina during the country’s winter season. Back in New York, Steph is getting ready for her first summer in the big city. Although we’ve been miles apart, recent months have brought sudden periods of growth and self-realizations for us both.

While on the topic of growth + evolvement, we give our first impressions of the new SZA album CTRL – TDE’s unapologetic sultry songstress delivers all the #carefreeblackgirl vibes on this long-awaited piece of work, and we are here¬†for every bit of it.

Thanks for listening!

XOXO,

Episode 51: Moonlight

Hey, Millies! A few thousand miles and technical difficulties couldn’t hold us back too long – this week we are happily reunited with each other and with you lovely listeners – welcome back. ūüôā

The¬†89th Academy Awards were held this past Sunday and our favorite Oscar wins included¬†Viola Davis taking home Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Fences¬†and Moonlight¬†taking home Best Picture. We chat about the awkward¬†award announcement mix up and discuss if this years’ wins showed improvement from the 2016 #OscarsSoWhite backlash on Hollywood.

Over the weekend Steph attended a live podcast taping in NYC for the hip-hop and pop culture podcast, The Read – a question from the audience sparked a controversial discussion on societal gender roles in the current dating scene for Millennials. We share our personal thoughts on the topic, as well as the importance of open-mindedness and inclusion at a time when gender issues are on the front lines.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Hey Millies! It’s been a while – after the holidays and Ashley beginning a whole new life abroad, we are back!

Like most TV & movie fans, we tuned into the 2017 Golden Globe Awards this past Sunday night. Episode 49: Publicity & Podcasting

Welcome back Millies! We hope our east coast listeners are staying warm on these brutally cold days, it’s very burr.

Kanye West is at it again with his attention seeking shenanigans Рearlier this week the musician was seen at the Trump Tower in New York for a mysterious meeting with president-elect Donald Trump. We share our thoughts (and disappointment) in what some are calling a publicity stunt.

Diversity and representation in¬†media is a topic near and dear to our hearts. After seeing the #SupportPOCPods hashtag on Twitter last week, we were inspired to discuss why it’s important now more than ever to have a diverse spectrum of storytellers in media, especially in podcasting.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

#TMH Tune of the Week: J. Cole // False Prophets

Episode 47: Protests & Pressure

Greetings Millies! We’re back on the mic’s this week after a quick break. Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock was named People Magazine’s 2016 Sexiest Man Alive – we chat briefly on what makes him “sexy” and an overall good role model.

Shifting gears, we get into the powerful student protests that have taken place over the past week since America’s new President-elect was chosen. While the youth often get a bad rap for being lazy, glued-to-an-iPhone narcissists, we share how their recent public action¬†combats generational stereotypes at a time when unity is needed the most.

Take some freakin’ action people and fight for what you believe¬†in! We express the importance of¬†supporting¬†organizations like Refugee Rights, and subscribing to a newspaper or donating to ProPublica to keep trustworthy¬†journalism alive.

Has dating become hopeless? A Rolling Stone article published yesterday explores the awkward, in-between space many Millennials are currently in as we try to achieve personal intimacy in the age of social media and internet dating. We give our favorite takeaways from the piece and our hopes for the future of relationships.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 45: #GirlBoss

Welcome back Millies! Yesterday, Covergirl announced their first male brand ambassador (or ‘CoverBoy’), 17-year-old James Charles. Over the past year, James has risen to fame on both YouTube and Instagram for his killer makeup skills – we chat about how this is another step towards combatting gender roles in our culture.

Everyone is tiredddd of Trump’s nonstop shenanigans. This past weekend an audio file from 2005 was released,¬†where¬†the presidential candidate was recorded saying some disrespectful and derogatory things about sexually assaulting women. The same day, author Kelly Oxford tweeted her first assault, and encouraged her followers to share their stories – which¬†led to an outpouring of thousands of responses. We discuss why it is so important to address¬†sexual assault in our society, and the need for both genders to speak out about it in order for real change to happen.

According to a survey mentioned in a recent Wall Street Journal article,¬†Millennial women express¬†¬†more ambition than women¬†of previous generations, but¬†are facing the same wage gaps and struggles to get ahead in the corporate world. This has forced many 20-something’s to forge¬†their own paths by creating start-ups and joining more inclusive companies – we share our thoughts and experiences on this issue.

This is The Millennial Hour.

Steph & Ash

Episode 43: History in the Making

Happy hump-day! This past Saturday marked the grand opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. We share our excitement for this long overdue¬†museum, and what it means to America’s¬†black community at¬†a time when we are all seeking unity.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton threw ALL the shade at their first 2016 Presidential Debate on Monday night. We chat about our favorite below-the-belt comments and how this reminded us more of a WWE SmackDown than a political debate.

Manifesting¬†our purpose and passions in life is a struggle Millennials know all too well, especially with the country’s job market often not meeting our career needs. We offer a few¬†words of wisdom and tidbits of advice on how to stay focused on professional growth.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 41: Yes, We Belong

Welcome back! We kick start our¬†conversation with¬†Georgetown University’s decision to offer admission advantages to any descendants of slaves who were sold in one of the largest, well documented 1838 slave trades. We discuss¬†if this action is enough, and why this is relevant during¬†a time when racial tensions are high in America.

Solange Knowles is known for her soulful presence and artistic mind, so when she wrote¬†‘And Do You Belong? I do’¬†on her site this past Sunday, we had to read. In the beautifully written piece, Knowles expresses what it means to ‘belong’ as an African American in ‘white spaces’. We share how our own¬†self-identification has shaped our experiences.

As we discussed in last week’s newsletter, it’s nothing new that Millennials get blamed for it all¬†– declining car sales, workplace gaps, cultural laziness – the list goes on. We briefly chat on how Laura Marsh sets the record straight in a New Republic piece that breaks the myth of¬†Millennials being¬†“cultural rebels.”

This week you’ll notice we may sound a little different – Steph is currently in Denver, CO for the 2016¬†Online News Association Conference and we decided to record during¬†her layover in Houston. It was nothing a little #teamwork couldn’t handle! Stay tuned as we will soon make some exciting changes for #TMH.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

#TMH Tune of the Week: Solange // Losing You

Episode 40: Anthems & #Aubrih

Welcome back #TMH listeners! This week, we tackle the controversy surrounding the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the playing of the national anthem. We discuss how his race, upbringing, and his NFL platform¬†all play into him taking a stand against police brutality in the U.S., and how social media reacted to his actions.

The 2016 MTV VMA’s did not disappoint this year – with four different stunning Rihanna performances, a 16-minute Beyonce show and an obnoxious Kanye rant, it was undoubtedly an entertaining night. We share our (Ashley’s) obsession with the birth of #AubRih and why Drake presenting Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award was the cutest moment in the history of the VMA’s.

Do nice guys always finish last? We chat about the patience many Millennials lack when it comes to finding “the one”, and the need to stay away from the Chris Brown’s and wait for your Drake.

This is The Millennial Hour.

XOXO,

Steph & Ash

Episode 38: Love & Other Drugs

Happy hump-day! As the 2016 Olympics continue in Rio, we give our thoughts on the controversial Рand offensive Рnews coverage that a few USA female champions have received, and the dire need for diversity in all newsrooms.

Social media has its pros and cons, and celebrities often face some of the harshest backlash for what they choose to share on their profiles. We chat about what stirred up¬†Twitter’s¬†#SelenaEndedJustinBieberParty, and how other Hollywood couples in the limelight sometimes choose to put a little too much on their Instagram¬†and Snapchat.

The social media world also presents us¬†Millennials¬†with a constant¬†Facebook feed¬†of new engagements, baby announcements, weddings and other life-changing news. We share what personal relationship¬†pressures we’ve faced and how the internet offers only a narrow view of others’ realities.

This is The Millennial Hour.
